On 19th October 2024, 20 members of the Probus Parish Players family attended the Cornwall Drama Association awards evening for the 2023/24 performance season.
Our production of 'The Little Mermaid' received 2 nominations from the CDA committee. The first was for 'Best Director of a Musical', given to Sophie Baker, and the second was for 'Outstanding Costumes in a Musical or Pantomime.' We have never before received nominations in either of these categories, so this was a massive achievement for us and recognises the huge amount of work that goes into putting on a village pantomime. Sophie worked tirelessly with the cast and put her all into her directorial debut! The show was a real triumph and the audience showed their appreciation with standing ovations, night after night. Our costumes team, made up of Linda, Jill, Rosi and Rachel, hand made our stunning costumes which brought our pantomime to life. From the mermaids in sequins from head to toe, to the giant comedic eels and the seagulls in wings and bucket hats, every detail contributed to the overall picture which was truly breath taking. Ladies, we are forever grateful to you all!
Unfortunately, Sophie and the Costumes team were just pipped to the post on the night however, they were up against extremely talented competitors, and just receiving a nomination is something to be celebrated. We want to congratulate our friends at St Stephen Pantomime Company for their win of the 'Outstanding Costumes' award. This was extremely well deserved!
The evening did hold one unexpected surprise for us...
Our very own Andrew Kennedy and Pete Keam were recognised by the CDA committee for their performance as our comedy duo 'Crusty and Corky' and given a special award! The CDA adjudicators attended 54 pantomimes during the 2023/24 season, so it is an amazing achievement to be recognised as the best comedy duo they saw. Pete and Andrew, we are very proud of you both and agree that your performances were deserving of such recognition.
It is such an honour to be able to celebrate the extraordinary talents among the world of Cornish amateur theatre. We are surrounded by so many other theatre groups and it is joyous to see them all receive the recognition that they deserve. We would also like to say thank you to the CDA Committee and Atlantic Hotel for hosting such a wonderful occasion. From the food, to the decor, to the fabulous silent disco, a brilliant time was had by all!
The gallery below contains some highlights from our evening! We can't wait to (hopefully) do it all over again next year!
